Facebook Applications

Facebook Applications IconAs you might know, Mark Zuckerberg presented the new Facebook Timeline at 2011's f8 (https://www.facebook.com/f8). For those who don't, Timeline is basically a completely renewed profile. But given its features we can't call it a profile anymore because in fact it is the one place where we can easily see all we have ever post on Facebook since we first logged in. He also introduced the new generation of Open Graph and Applications that allow for new and exiting ways of sharing what we like and what we do. There's no doubt in my mind that we are looking at the beginning of a new revolution on how we express ourselves on-line.

All the above is very interesting, but here I want to look at all this new technology from another point of view, which is even more exiting: that of electronic commerce.

The new Facebook and Electronic Commerce

We are all used to see the Facebook "Like" button almost on every Web site we visit nowadays. On some Web sites we also see a "Send" button or even Facebook "Comments" feed. This is pretty cool, but consider the following:

Lets say that you have an on-line store to sell chocolates. A visitor to your Web site can browse products and buy on-line. Some people will buy chocolates for themselves some other will give chocolates as gifts; in general, people can: buy or eat or be gifted with or just look at your chocolates. Now it is possible to express all these actions on the new Facebook Timeline via Apps so each time I browse a product page in your site, the following story could be posted automatically in my Timeline: Alejandro looked Almond Bark at Los Chocolateros including a full description of the product. But that's not all: the product name would be a link to the corresponding product in your Web site and the company name would be a link to your Web site's home page.
The same thing can be done with any other action: eat, buy or even be gifted with. Depending on the action the story can be posted automatically or by clicking a button.

The possibilities are endless and the impact of this on your Web site popularity can be huge. If your customers engage with your application, your company and your products can be a part of their lives and their friend's lives.
